One opportunity you should think about is forming a home business notary office, if you want to enter the great world of home based business. This is a field that’s becoming more and more popular with people who want to have their own home based business. This guide will help you decide it becoming a notary is right for you.

There are many benefits to being a home business notary. Chief among them is the ability to choose the way you want to work. You can be mobile and go from client to client, or you can set up your notary service in your home and have your clients come to you. You can work part-time or full time. It’s all up to you!

And there are various ways on how to become a notary and get your notary license. Most states have specific guidelines and licenses that they require before you can open your home business notary. You will have to check with your state notary association for full details on the requirements for a home business notary.

Generally, though, to become a home business notary and receive a notary license, you have to take a brief course that usually only takes one day of your time, and then you take a notary exam. Local community colleges and universities in your area very likely offer the classes necessary to become a notary public. If there aren’t any colleges in your area that offer a notary public class, you can find schools online that do.

Correspondence courses are also available. Make sure, though, that any class you take fulfills your particular state’s notary public requirements for obtaining a notary license. The courses usually cost about $120, but that’s a small investment that will bring you big returns in the future.

It’s also a good idea to check out the opportunities for notary public services in your area. Some places to look are at banks, financial institutions of all types, attorneys, nursing homes, real estate offices, and insurance companies. These are just a few of the many types of businesses that have a need for reliable notary public services.

Most of them would prefer to have a notary public on call rather than have one on staff in order to cut back on employee expenses and employee benefits. This is good news for you, because it means that there are more chances that a company will use your notary public services on an as needed basis, which allows you to have more clients. Many of them will even allow you to rent a desk and phone space in exchange for your notary public services.

Charges for notary public services range anywhere from $25 to $200, depending on the service you provide. If you’re going to your clients, you can charge more because of the expense involved in travel. If the job is particularly involved or time-consuming, this also allows you to charge more. It’s a good idea to go for the high-volume clients like banks that need a lot of notary public services, rather than to focus on big jobs that take a lot of time. The more clients you have, generally, the better off you are.

Before taking any action on becoming notary public certified, though, do your research. Find out what your state requires and where you can get the training you need. You also want to find out what the competition in your area’s doing, and know what you have to do to beat it. Maybe the notary publics in your area have their clients come to them. If that’s true, then you want to be a mobile notary public. And if your area’s saturated with notary services, you may want to consider a different home based business altogether.

It’s also a good idea to plan for how you’re going to get the news out about your new home business notary. There are many ways you can advertise. Newspaper ads, flyers, and business cards are just a few of the many marketing tools available for you to make use of to spread the news about your notary public business. Before you do, just make sure you have the notary license you need to operate in your state. You wouldn’t want to be fined for impersonating a notary public, now would you?

Breaking into the world of self-employment can be a little scary. If you are looking for a way to earn more money, you might want to consider building a notary service business. It can be an interesting way to work without being glued to your computer screen all day. If you offer mobile notary services you can meet your clients wherever they are and see something new every day.

Before you start any business, though, you need to have a plan. There are lots of big questions and little details to get ironed out before you get started. Mobile notaries need to make sure they have a reliable vehicle. It’s also a good idea to carry your ID with you and display it all times. Lanyards are a great way to show off photo IDs to new customers and clients, and these days you can even purchase a ribbon lanyard with your company logo printed on the strap.

From fees and coverage area to computer equipment and a website, getting started can be a little overwhelming. Develop a plan for each of the topic areas before you get started.

Getting Your Notary Credentials

Before you can notarize any documents, you will need to apply for a commission in your state. The National Notary Association is a good place to start if you are not sure where or how to obtain your credentials. Requirements vary from place to place. After you have received your notary credentials, you will need to purchase an embosser and other equipment. Other tools that might be handy for mobile notary service include a receipt book and GPS device.

Establishing Your Notary Fees

Most people have difficulty establishing their service fees. On one hand you don’t want to price your services so high that no on hires you. On the other hand, you need to make sure you price your services high enough that you don’t lose money in your new business venture. Fee schedules can be determined by a number of factors. You might find it best to charge a flat fee per notarized signature. You can always determine transportation fees based on a sliding scale. The farther you must travel from your typical service area, the higher your transportation fees should be.

Promoting Your New Business

In order to keep the business alive you need to find new customers and keep your current customers happy. Let your clients know exactly what services you offer, and remind them of your availability through a monthly email letter or by giving them the opportunity to sign up for your e-newsletter. Even if a potential customer doesn’t need your services immediately, give them a business card. They might need you at a later date.

Advertising can help you get the word out about your notary service. If you have some money to spend on a classified or internet ad, it can be a good investment. Advertising for free on websites like Craig’ s List may help you connect with new customers as well. Finally, even if you just publish basic information on a free site, it is imperative that you establish your own website. The first thing people check out when it comes to working with a new business is the company website.

Become a Notary – Requirements and Benefits

Becoming a notary public may be a good option for you if you are looking for a work from home opportunity. As a notary public you will have the option of working out of your home, establishing a mobile notary service, or leasing office space at a company that might have need of your services.

Many of the qualifications for becoming a notary vary from state to state, but there are some criteria that are generally the same across the country. For one thing, you will need to pass a state exam in order to be licensed as a notary public. In order to pass this exam successfully, you will more than likely need to complete a training course to prepare you for the questions you will see on the test. Some notary public training courses can be found online, but you can also find them at local community colleges.

For most states, the basic qualifications for becoming a notary are as follows:

*     Be at least 18 years of age
*     Be a person who is considered to be of good moral character
*     Be able to read and write English (fluently)
*     Be a resident of the state you want to become a notary in
*     Be a legal resident of the United States
*     No convictions or incarcerations for felonies in the ten years prior to your commission date

You might also need to prove that you have never had a professional license of any kind revoked or suspended, and that you have never held a public office or government position that paid you a hefty salary. Be sure to check your state’s particular requirements, however, so that you will know exactly what expectations you need to meet. It is important that you learn about this information before you begin preparing for your state’s exam.

The need for notary publics continues to grow each year, so depending upon the type of area you live in you might easily find work on a regular basis. Real estate, insurance, banking, law, and some business professions all have a regular need for the services of a notary. Keep in mind, however, that many of these types of businesses have staff members who are notaries. Try not to let that discourage you, though. There are still plenty of other opportunities you can pursue.

In fact, notary services are so in-demand that you will probably be able to carve out a nice business for yourself by advertising your services locally. To start, consider advertising online. That is probably the best way for you to generate business and attract new clients. Once you have built a small client list, your business will likely grow even more by word of mouth.

You might also want to consider investing in some professional looking business cards. You can generally find a wide variety of cards for little or no cost online, but if you do have to pay for them, shop around for the best bargain. Professional looking business cards can be obtained for minimal cost and the expense is tax deductible. They are also a terrific tool for spreading the word about your business.

If you keep your clients happy and set your rates low enough to be competitive in your area, you should have no difficulty getting your new business off the ground. If you aren’t sure what other notaries are charging in your area, you might want to start networking with other professionals in order to get a feel for what their rates are.

What Are The Requirements To Become A Notary Public?

A Notary Public is considered a public official. Their powers and duties are defined by State statute. A Notary Public, aka “Notary”, has the power, according to the State of Tennessee, to “administer oaths, take depositions, qualify parties to bills in chancery, and take affidavits”.

A Notary can take acknowledgments and certify the probate or acknowledgment of instruments but a Notary Public is NOT allowed to create documents.  It’s my understanding that this would be practicing law without a license.

When you see statements like “A Notary is authorized to do formal protests of negotiable instruments”, you need to read that like this – Notarys cannot create documents or add words to them.  That’s the job of an attorney.

Having been a Notary Public and Certified Mobile Signing Agent for over 7 years, I feel the best layman’s definition of a “Notary” is someone who verifies a person(s) identity and witnesses (or acknowledges) the signature of a document.

The first step toward becoming a Notary Public is for you to go to your local county clerks office in the county where you legally reside and pick up an application form. In most counties, you have the option to go online to obtain an application.  You can search online for a term such as ‘your county’ and the term ‘notary public’ to find more details.

The cost is $19 and the period of your commission is four years.  You must be at least 18 years old and be a legal US citizen. You must also reside in the county where you are commissioned, have no criminal record, not be a member of the Armed Forces or a legislator of the State or Nation and you cannot owe any government agency any money.

That may sound like a lot, but it’s basic stuff for the average, lawabiding U.S. Citizen.  Contact your local county clerk for more specific details.

I hope this helps. My main point is to let you know that it’s normally a one hour task of work to apply for and receive your Notary Public Commission.

What You Need To Know Before Calling A Notary Public

Often the question arises, “What does a notary public do?” The answer to that depends on the state you live in, and can even vary county by county. While a notary only notarizes signatures, there are other functions they may perform as well. For example, a notary is automatically licensed to conduct marriage ceremonies in three states, and can apply for temporary authority to conduct marriages in others.

For the most part, a simple definition is that a Notary Public is a person who is appointed or commissioned to administer oaths and acknowledge that the signatures on documents belong to the people signing. When acknowledging a document, the notary public is stating that he or she has satisfactorily ascertained the identity of the signer with legal documentation, and that the documents were either signed in their presence or the signer has sworn that the signature was their own.

Since legal documents are commonly notarized, legal assistants, paralegals, or attorneys are often appointed as a notaries. However, being employed in the legal field is not a prerequisite to becoming a notary and there are many classes available, both online and in person that will teach a person how to carry out the duties of a notary public, and will prepare them to take the state exam.

In California, where I practice, the notary is confirmed in their role by the Secretary of State. In other states, such as Florida, Minnesota, and South Carolina, notaries are actually appointed by the governor, or in the case of New Jersey, a notary public is commissioned by the State Treasurer. Conduct an online search for your state and you will easily find out who supervises the notary process for your state. The length of time that a notary commission or appointment is valid varies by state, but typically they range from 4 to 10 years in most cases.

By and large, notaries are not allowed to give legal advice, make recommendations regarding contracts, or explain to a person how their signing of a document affects them. The notary public is simply there to ensure that the person named in the document is the one who is signing. Anything that goes beyond that could be grounds for the notary having their commission suspended or even revoked.

Tools of the Trade

The toolbox that a notary uses to fulfill their duties is very simple. Every notary has an official seal that is used to “stamp” documents. The seal includes the name of the notary, state and county where they are authorized to notarize, and the date their commission expires. Additionally, each notary must keep an official journal where they record the type of documents they notarized, the location where the signing occurred, and to record signatures as proof of the signers’ identity. In many states a notary will also take a thumb print from the signer and place it next to their journal entry.

If you are looking for a way to make a little extra money without spending your days tied to a desk, starting a mobile notary business might be the perfect thing for you. As a mobile notary, you will go straight to your clients whenever they need notary services.

Start a new business can be overwhelming at first. There are so many questions to answer and hundreds of little details to get in order. For mobile notaries, it is important to have reliable transportation. Many will find it’s beneficial to keep notary credentials and a photo ID with them at all times. This is helpful if you go to homes and offices of new clients who need a way to verify who you are. A retractable badge holder is recommended, but other types of ID badge holders will work too.

While it’s difficult to cover everything you need to know about starting a mobile notary business, the following suggestions will get you started and help you determine if a notary business is something you would like to pursue.

Becoming a Notary

Before you can start, you have to apply for a notary commission. You can go the National Notary Association for help locating the appropriate application forms. Requirements may vary depending on your location. You will need to invest in notary tools such as an embosser, and it is recommended that you buy a receipt booklet or use business software to keep track of your income and expenses. As a mobile notary, you may find a GPS device is helpful for getting you to your customers on time.

You can get a feel for rates in your area by doing a little market research. Conduct a survey to see how much other notaries charge. Don’t under value your services by setting cheaper rates. Think about your expenses when establishing what you will charge your customers. You may want to charge a flat fee per signature and then assign a travel fee based on the distance you have to travel. A second, but less popular, option is to charge an hourly rated based on travel and service time.

Advertising Your Business

No business will be successful without customers. So you need let your potential clients know what services you offer. Try networking with other business, and make sure you have business cards handy. You might find that a customer won’t need you immediately, but they will remember to call you the next time they need notary services.

Get in touch with your local chamber of commerce and the Better Business Bureau. Find out what business startup resources are available to you to help you build your clientele.

Advertising is helpful. If you can afford it, try buying ad space with your local online newspaper or classified service. It’s also a good idea to have a well-ranked website so that people who search for notary services online find your business and contact information.
